Dummy plugs were my problem. March 23, 2018
Reviewer: Thunder Dan from Portola, CA
I was having a long cranking start issue (5-10 seconds) when the truck would sit for 12 hours or more and after starting would run a little rough. I saw Diesel Tech  Ron's (RIP) videos on the issue and learned that it was likely failed o-rings on the dummy plugs. I have 175,000 miles on my 6.0 and am fully bullet proofed with exception of studs and head gaskets (haven't had any issues there yet because I addressed the EGR cooling system early enough).  I pulled the dummy plugs and on both sides the both the lower o-rings had failed and were allowing oil to slowly leak out of the fuel rails causing a need for the oil pump to fill the galleys again and allow for enough oil pressure to build before it would allow the injectors to fire. My stand pipes were fine, but I replaced them anyways with exception of the lower standpipe on the drivers side because I could not get it to stay together with the upper plug and could not get it out of the head/block.  It would be nice for there to be better instructions for how to possibly get the lower standpipes out if they are stuck in place and a description with pictures of where the small allen plug with o-ring goes. I could not see where it might go and found out later that it is supposed to go somewhere under the drivers side valve cover. And apparently the green o-ring is for your CCV elbow that comes out of the drivers side valve cover. These look like good replacement parts and hopefully do the job for longer than 170,000 miles. Good fix and only took about 2.5 hours per side.
